Figure Out How to Teach Your Child to Read

By Jen Young

Are you a parent who would like to discover how to teach your child to read? If you are, you definitely have a lot of questions in mind. You might even be wondering when or how you can really teach your kid the proper way. What you are going to read right here can help you understand how exactly your son or daughter can easily improve his or her reading abilities.

There are plenty of methods that can be used to teach your child to read. These kinds of techniques generally agree with the typical concepts and ideas which are being used by teachers these days. First, teaching children to read is actually possible at an early age. A kid as young as twelve months old can already learn and understand how to read. With this, any parent can already start teaching his or her child to read even at home as learning starts at home. Parents just need to be sensitive to the needs of their children.

One interesting and helpful fact is that fun encourages learning. Kids learn best when their learning activity involves fun and is related to their interests. The look-say method along will not prove beneficial. You must encourage a variety of games and other jolly activities that involve reading.

Incorporating reading in daily activities can help it become a normal part of your child's day-to-day schedules. Reading then becomes natural for them. Bedtime reading is one helpful tool to teach your kids. Use books that have colorful pictures and are of interest to your child. If you can, try to let the child choose from among the baby books. Read using a soothing and calming voice. A relaxed environment becomes pleasurable for a child. When your baby is growing, you can point pictures and try spelling out the short words. Emphasize by pointing each every sound while you read the word.

Repetition can also encourage the child to read. How do you do it? First, choose one word for every day. Make sure that you sound and spell it correctly. Help your child repeat it as often as possible. However, make it as fun as possible and do not try to enforce it. Examples of simple words you can use are: dog, cat, mom, and dad.

If you are teaching your kid to read, singing the alphabet song as often as you can will also help. There are research studies that prove singing sounds of the letters when tuning the alphabet song can improve your baby's reading ability. Suggestions include Ah, Buh, Kuh, Duh. This is the principle on teaching using your baby's sounds.

As your child grows, you can get him to read a few words to you by reading aloud from a book's page. You'll see that your kid points to pictures or words. If he has questions calmly answer them and encourage him to express if he has any difficulty reading a word or words.

Also, there are supplementary Television shows and series that can help your kid read. However, you have to be very careful in choosing the kind of shows you would allow your child to watch. Make sure the TV shows are appropriate for his or her age. In addition, don't forget that it's important that you work teach your child to read personally to improve your relationship with your son or daughter.

Like any other methods, you can always teach your child to read using methods that advocate his own interests and preferences. Imposing rewards can be one of them. Though not recommended to be done every single time, you can set rewards for your child if he progresses or achieves a certain reading milestone, like being able to read a particularly difficult word for him. Do not push your child to get a book if at the time being, he wants to enjoy playing with you or with his playmates. You can schedule reading sessions but do not enforce them. If your child has prominent learning disabilities, it is best to consult a child physician as soon as possible.
